First Generation of Computers - Vaccum Tubes - 

( 1942 – 1959 )

*   Invented by J.P. Eckert and J.W. Mauchly

*   Known as ENIAC ( Electronic Numeric Integrator and Calculator )

*   Few examples are, EDVAC, UNIVAC, IBM - 701,                    IBM - 650

*   Vacuum tubes were the major component of this computers

*   Very heavy and huge in size

*   Binary Machine language was the programming language

*   Magnetic tapes and Magnetic drums were used to store data in main memory

*   Paper tapes and Punched cards were used as the input and output devices

*   Almost took days or weeks to get the output of a programme
