Second Generation Of Computers


Second Generation of Computers - Transistors -

(1959  – 1965  )

*    Used Transistors instead of Vacuum tubes
*    Transistors was invented at Bell Labs jointly by three
 individuals, William Bradford Shockley, Walter Houser
 Brattain, and John Bardeen in 1947
*    Few examples are, IBM 7094 series, IBM 1400 series and CDC 1604, UNIVAC – 1108, CDC – 3600, Honeywell - 400 etc.
*    Core storage was its main feature.
*    Magnetic core and Magnetic tape or disc were used to store data
*    Magnetic tape and punched cards were the input and output devices
*    Programming languages were machine language and assembly language
*    Main programming languages used were FORTRAN, COBOL, ALGOL
*    Calculation time was very low compared to first generation computers
