Used Transistors
instead of Vacuum tubes
Transistors was invented at Bell Labs jointly
by three
individuals, William Bradford Shockley, Walter
Houser
Brattain, and John Bardeen in 1947
Few
examples are, IBM 7094 series, IBM 1400 series and CDC 1604, UNIVAC – 1108, CDC
– 3600, Honeywell - 400 etc.
Core
storage was its main feature.
Magnetic
core and Magnetic tape or disc were used to store data
Magnetic
tape and punched cards were the input and output devices
Programming
languages were machine language and assembly language
Main
programming languages used were FORTRAN, COBOL, ALGOL
Calculation
time was very low compared to first generation computers
