Third Generation of Computers - Circuits -
(1965 – 1975 )
Integrated
circuits (IC) were used instead of separate
transistors
A single chip may contain thousands of
transistors
IC was invented by Robert Noyce and Jack S Kilby
in
1958-59
Smaller in size, faster, more reliable and
less expensive
compared to older generation computers
Few examples are IBM 360, IBM 370, UNIVAC 1108,
UNIVAC AC 9000, PDP-8, PDP-11, ICL 2900 etc.
Time for calculation reduced to nanoseconds
Programming languages were higher level
languages like
BASIC.
Large magnetic tapes or discs were used to
store data
Magnetic tape, keyboard, printer, monitor
e.t.c were the
input and output devices.
