Third Generation Of Computers

Third Generation of Computers - Circuits -

(1965  – 1975  )

*    Integrated circuits (IC) were used instead of separate

 transistors

*    A single chip may contain thousands of transistors

*    IC was invented by Robert Noyce and Jack S Kilby in

 1958-59

*    Smaller in size, faster, more reliable and less expensive

 compared to older generation computers

*    Few examples are IBM 360, IBM 370, UNIVAC 1108,

 UNIVAC AC 9000, PDP-8, PDP-11, ICL 2900 etc.

*    Time for calculation reduced to nanoseconds

*    Programming languages were higher level languages like

 BASIC.

*    Large magnetic tapes or discs were used to store data

*    Magnetic tape, keyboard, printer, monitor e.t.c were the

 input and output devices.
